The Hypodermic Needle Model
This model is that information will go straight to the audience's brain and make them act on it, although it only works in the short term. An example is war time propaganda trying to scare people into acting.
The Inoculation Model
This model is that as the audience is exposed to more and more of the same information, they become immune to it and do not react as much/at all. An example is constant reports of war and terrorism that people just don't care about any more.
The Two-Step Flow Model
This model is that the audience will take their information to someone they believe to be wiser/more knowledgeable on the subject to hear their thoughts before they decide themselves. An example is asking elders what they think of recent events.
The Uses & Gratifications Theory
This theory is that people will consume media not because they are told to, but for a certain reason of their own choosing, for example, reasons like: Entertainment, socializing, information, personal identity, etc. This is a much more modern and accurate example of how people respond to media unlike the previous three examples.
The Reception Theory
This theory is that people will consume media and interpret it in different ways. This can be the preferred (what the creator intended), negotiated (they take some parts, ignore others) and oppositional (the opposite of what the creator intended). Examples are like messing around in a sandbox like GTA or Just Cause is the preferred reception and messing around in a serious game like The last of us is the oppositional reception.
